Mindfulness, An Energy That Flows Like Water

Mindfulness is the energy of being aware and awake to the present moment ~Thich Nhat Hanh

standing in big muddy

Sitting relaxing, meditatively at nearby lake with warm sunshine this winter day.
Idyllic holiday conditions for me & vacationing school children & families.

Breathing in, warm and happy
Breathing out, feeling unseasonably, short-sleeved comfortable.
Cheeks rosy, pleasurable glow.
All is most wonderful at this moment.

And, it’s not all as wonderful as it seems.
News of arctic, snowy, wet wintry conditions
somewhere distant from here; perhaps where you are.

With extremely dry conditions persisting since January 2013, local water agency’s service area is experiencing drought conditions. This declaration comes as severely low water storage levels are coupled with California’s driest year of record.
And there’s no rain in sight anytime soon
setting up the region for real hardship in the months ahead.

Mindfulness requires that, from being stably present,
we calmly learn from the past and prepare wisely for the future.
The public health professional in me reflects on the axiom
plan for the worst and work for the best.

Like most in this blogging community
I’m conserving water and energy, but can do better.
Shorter showers, minimal plant watering, a dirty car.
I’m walking and cycling more than driving.
But isn’t this bigger than me and you?
With shortages, rationing, going without,
will compassion & kindness
towards ourselves and others prevail?
What do you advice we all do now
and then?

Changes in the weather are about all of us.
Together we are one, braving uncertainty.
Ancient teachings from fully realized enlightened ones
combined with the latest scientific and technological insights
offer us personal, philanthropic and ecological guidance.

Such a pleasing blue sky day,
bringing awareness back to my breath,
easing anxious feelings
and fearful thoughts.
Smiling to water fowl
& people playing in dirt and mud
where, under usual conditions,
myself and others would be paddling a kayak.
Knowing that there will be an answer
I sip lightly on a water bottle
before pedaling home.

Thank you, brother David for another wonderful gift, and thank you for sharing your practice of faith with us.

“Miracles don’t cause faith, but rather the scent of kinredness that unites people. Miracles overwhelm unbelief. Faith Grows from friendship.” —Rumi from “New Moon, Hilal”

Thanks for reminding us that we need to continue to be mindful. It can be difficult in this day in age, but with every one of us that practices, the better we all will be. 🙂

Yes, our rain has not been forthcoming. The misty clouds travel on to disperse their elixir of life elsewhere. Although the blue skies urged me to walk three miles today, my thoughts wandered to the missing rain. I sense what is naturally amiss. Thank you for being mindful in your thirst for routine cleanliness, using just the right amount of what you and other living things need. Your actions are admirable, Smile.

sounds like we both enjoyed walking in the pleasant weather of today. as all is impermanent, rain will again fall, lakes will again fill, although I’m uncertain as to when. wishing you a happy moment, eM.

The “useless boat ramp” and “nothing to dam” are eerie shots. I wonder how many people understand the significance of such signs.

thanks for your astute observation! those are, perhaps the most graphic images posted. experience suggests that too many are slow learners. but I have hope that, somehow, we will all stay hydrated and well 🙂

    Looking around
    Recalling the story
    Of the yogi
    Who got himself
    Committed
    To a lunatic asylum
    Where
    He could continue his practice
    Undisturbed

      from here
      no one
      looks
      any more
      crazy
      than
      the other 🙂

    Hi David. This is serendipitious.

One hour ago I finished an excellent book Fran got me for Christmas by Linda Marsa . . . “Fevered – Why a Hotter Planet Will Hurt Our Health and How We Can Save Ourselves.” Lots of public health people are concerned. You’ve covered it here in a nutshell. Thanks .

May we all sip lightly. . . and mindfully.

i’ll look for that book, Bruce.
      thanks for keeping the light
of hope and well-being burning 🙂

        i have heard it said,
        a person can’t be neurotic
        if they are
        breathing correctly

        true
        😆

        and as long
        as there is
        breathing,
        there is
        hope.

    Amazing post, brother!

Glad to have stumbled upon your website.

Truer words were not said. Mindfulness, these days we often forget this thing.

To be aware. To be present. To be.

Would love a feedback from you on my blog about Minimalism and Simplicity 🙂

    Keep in touch. Cheers!

What beautiful words and photos. Your poetry touches me deeply. Thank you for visiting my Shunyata site. You might enjoy more photos of the snow on my other site here: http://forestgardenblog.wordpress.com/2014/01/22/snow-washed/
We all pray for rain on the West coast, and for balance in our weather patterns world wide. We have enjoyed an abundance or rain over the last year, and are appreciative for the blessings of water. May beautiful clouds bring gentle showers to your region as well. Best wishes, WG

Hmm it appears like your site ate my first comment (it was super long)
so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I had written and say, I’m
thoroughly enjoying your blog. I as well am
an aspiring blog writer but I’m still new to everything.
Do you have any helpful hints for rookie blog writers?
    I’d certainly appreciate it.
