Holding Mother Earth While She Sweats!

The Earth is not just the environment.
The Earth is us.
Everything depends on whether we have this insight or not.
~Thich Nhat Hanh, from Love Letter to the Earth

The object of our meditation is the Earth.
Smoke is on my eastern horizon,
from a California town burning
close to where another
town burned last summer.
July, 2016 was the warmest month observed, globally
in our period of records dating back to 1880.

What does this mean,
what can I do to feel necessary,
& not add more carbon
to ourΒ global green house?
July, 2016 was the warmest month observed, globally
in our period of records dating back to 1880.

Taking out frosty ice cubes
from the freezer into a water-glass
imagining my manta working;
breathing in hot, breathing out cool.
July, 2016 was the warmest month observed, globally
in our period of records dating back to 1880.

That it seems distressing
makes me want to tune it out.
Yet, others are loosing their housing
to fires around here, floods, elsewhere.
July, 2016 was the warmest month observed, globally
in our period of records dating back to 1880.

Mindful living necessitates accepting
what is really happening,
for whatever reason it’s happening.
On retreat, taking refuge with others
to stay, calm & compassionate.
The object of our meditation is the Earth.
July, 2016 was the warmest month observed, globally
in our period of records dating back to 1880.

May all find insight enjoying
thisΒ Earth Holder’s Retreat entitled,
For A Future to Be Possible.
These talks, I produced a couple of months back
are filled with coolingΒ wisdom
for these ever-warming days.
Seems certain that whatever happens
with our changing climate,
we’re in this together.

Ah, you produce videos as part of your involvement with Deer Park; am I reading you correctly, David? As to AGW, then I have to say I don’t feel much encouraged, especially given the abject state of politics. Our new Prime Minister here in Britain, upon her appointment, immediately closed the government’s climate change department. Not a sign of good intentions, I’m afraid. And Hillary’s sponsored by fossil fuel corporates, so I think we know how that will play out. Oh well, another species bites the dust? πŸ™‚

thanks for your reflection, Hariod! this was a special retreat for which i was asked to produce the videos. usually they produce their own. seems that after so many lifetimes of putting heads in the sands, we’re not about to take them out. well, at least without some prodding. humanity has so much potential πŸ™‚

These fires are so distressing — a century of short-sighted Forest Service fire suppression policy that provided the tinder, the carelessness of humans who are the proximate cause of these catastrophic blazes. And the deaths of so much wildlife, and the destruction of their homes — never mentioned by the media, as if they matter not at all. Thank you for your gentle reflection.

    Don’t cry, my little Rose

    Etched in history’s twisted tales
Penned by the victors, the truth
    Lies buried under lies;
    Nevertheless, it’s in plain sight,
    Societies’ legacy is destruction.
    No tongue can tell
    The road to hell
    Was preplanned knowingly.

Thank you for a very encouraging film and retreat. Allen Watts use to say that as an apple tree is appling, the Earth is peopling. Maybe if more would understand the peopling of the earth, we would take better care of our mother.

The Earth is us. We are in this together. It is hard for me to find that balance between activism and calm. I do what I can and sometimes have to step away for a while. I become angry, which isn’t so very helpful. My relationship with Her means everything to me. I love your title – Holding Mother Earth While She Sweats. The videos are great.
Thank you for this post David.

When I learned to become aware of how I treated myself, I realised it was always reflected back into my earth and to those around me. Looking within and nurturing myself with love and compassion, I began to naturally do this for the earth and to those around me. Your love shines within and to us David, because I can see how much you love Mother Earth and how you encourage us to do the same. πŸŒΊπŸ™πŸ»

I think it is because of people like you, and the people at this retreat, and the fact that retreats like this happen, all around the world, that I remain unshakeably optimistic. It’s all okay. We are all okay. There is a world that already exists in which we awoke and used the *knowledge and technology we already have* to turn things around. With love and certainty I hold that world in my heart, my mind, my essence. Imagine if we all held the same optimistic vision!
    With much love,
    Alison

I often read Thich Nhat Hanh’s thoughts… and those of Matthieu Ricard, Dalai Lama’s French interpreter for almost 4 decades… according to a German song:”die gedanken sind frei”(thoughts are free), as well as our imagination, I reckon myself as a free spirit… well, I do believe I’m on earth to admire and enjoy it – that’s my “religion”… πŸ™‚

Eloquently reinforced message – every time there seems a step forward on this issue there seems to be two steps back. So much governed not by care and love for this earth, rather greed and money. I look forward to seeing your produced videos when back to faster wifi!

I heard a song today, David, with lyrics that really hit home … “It’s always darkest before the dawn.” In my opinion, things just cannot get too much worse. My fervent prayer is that people will begin to cherish this Earth and act responsibly before it is too late. To see all these smiling, gorgeous faces brings FAITH to the surface that this world will be saved. Bless you for this powerful message, dear friend. ❀

That refrain is so powerful. It’s such a tight rope, walking the line between accepting the genuine and serious threat our Mother Earth is under and staying connected to joy and hope enough to not give up. Thanks for lovingly and peacefully reminding us, and the smiles in these photos touch me deeply. Be well…Harula xxx

The first video where there are clips of interviews. Something that stuck with me all day long yest. after I had viewed it. The environ. activist who said it could be exhausting. The depth of his passion in this quote was really striking. I am so thankful to environ. activists, it is not an easy job, and his passion was superbly recorded. Your videography is delightful, David. thank you. πŸ™‚
